Kawasaki’s Villopoto Claims 5th Win

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Ryan Villopoto takes his fifth win of the season.
September 5, 2007

Wortham, TX - Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Ryan Villopoto took a commanding points lead with his fifth overall win in the AMA Motocross Lites class at the 11th round of the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship.

After taking over the series lead a week ago at Steel City, Villopoto came to Wortham and put in a dominating performance, taking both moto wins.

“Today just went really well,” said Villopoto. “I didn’t get the start I wanted in the first moto, but was still able to pull off the win. In the second moto, I got the holeshot and just did everything I could to pull a gap and it all worked out. It feels really good leaving here with a 19-point lead and makes it a lot easier going into Glen Helen. I pretty much just have to ride smart.”

Teammate Ben Townley had a bit of bad luck in moto one when a first lap crash put him in 39th place. Fortunately, he quickly remounted his Kawasaki KX250F and put on an impressive charge which ended with a sixth-place finish. In moto two, he got off to a great start and took home the runner-up position which was good for third overall on the weekend.

Brett Metcalfe put in two solid rides at the Freestone County Raceway and landed just shy of a podium finish in fourth. Rookie Austin Stroupe, who had an amazing run in moto one to take second, was in the third spot in moto two when a mechanical failure ended his day. He finished out the day with a tenth place finish (2-32).

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Chris Gosselaar did not race due to an injury sustained in a crash last round in Delmont, Pa.

In the AMA Motocross division, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Timmy Ferry kept his title hopes alive with a consistent 4-3 finish, earning fourth overall on the weekend. Heading into next weekend’s season finale, he trails by just 13 points in the chase for the championship.

“Right now, it’s weird because I have to go all out to win both motos at Glen Helen,” said Ferry. “At the same time the pressure is not really on me because (Grant) Langston has quite a bit of a points lead. There are 50 points to be had next weekend and anything can happen. I guarantee it’s going to come down to the last moto.”

MotoSport Kawasaki's Kyle Chisholm put in two solid motos (8-9) to finish 9th overall in the AMA Motocross Lites while teammate Steve Boniface took 17th overall.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki teams head to San Bernardino, Calif., on September 8-9 for the final round of the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship.
